BYOU Breathwork
What is Breathwork and what are its benefits?
As breathwork begins to gain popularity, breathwork is used as a catch-all term for many different breathing techniques.
For example, it refers to deep abdominal breathing, the box-breathing technique, the Wim-Hof Method, and other techniques. Please note that this is not the same as breathwork. The aforementioned techniques involve, for example, working with a different breathing technique in which you breathe much slower or, on the contrary, much faster and more forcefully, consciously manipulating the ratio between inhalation and exhalation, or holding the breath (retention). Breathing techniques that in turn provide other benefits than the conscious connected breathing that you apply in breathwork and that you can use at another time.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF BREATHWORK?
Gain better insight into myself and into what is important to me
Process trauma and emotions
Releasing tension and stress so you feel free of worries, happy and good
Gain better insight into myself and what is important to me
Breathwork can be used to gain a better understanding of yourself and what is important to you. During a breath session, answers or new insights can surface and you can get in touch with your intrinsic needs.
Participants experience this as a journey of discovery from their feelings and as a release of expectations from society or themselves.
Processing trauma and emotions
By practicing breathwork you can get better in touch with your feelings, underlying emotions, and perhaps unprocessed traumas. During a breathwork session, you are invited to open up to this, to feel through these aspects, and give them loving attention. Breathwork is therefore experienced as self-healing.
Release of tension and stress making you feel free of worries, happy, and good.
Many participants often feel light and free of worry and tension after a breathwork session. After a breathwork session, more space is created in your head and heart, and you experience more peace, allowing you to achieve a calm, balanced state of mind that can put you in a state of ultimate bliss and "bliss.
WHAT IS THE POWER OF BREATHWORK?
The powerful and effective breathing technique quickly, sometimes after only 15 minutes, brings you into a different state of consciousness. Some participants report having the same experience after an Ayahuasca ritual.
You may experience less stress, ultimate relaxation, more connection with yourself, and gratitude. Breathwork also helps release fear and sadness and break through mental, physical, and emotional blockages. Breathwork is often used in "healing rituals" by various therapists and healers.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING BREATHWORK?
During a breathwork session, you consciously breathe full and deep into your belly and chest. In addition, you breathe through your mouth and not through your nose. For most participants, breathing through the mouth stimulates the release of various emotions, also, this specific breathing triggers a physical process in our body and mind.
In addition, tools such as light touch, tapping on pressure points, and shaking are used to release any blockages in your body and mind. Through the use of the breath and this combination of tools, you will experience the benefits of breathwork.

WHAT DO YOU EXPERIENCE DURING A BREATHWORK SESSION?
During a breathwork session you literally feel the change on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level; in the form of sensations, emotions, and perhaps a transcendent experience.
1) What happens to my body during the breathwork session?
While breathing, you may; feel tingling and vibrations throughout your body, and you may feel shocks in your body and or suddenly feel hot or cold.
You may experience that the muscles around your mouth or for example your hands and calves contract, this is called tetany.
Tetany is quite normal. About a third to half of the people who participate in a breathwork workshop experience tension and spasms.

2) Effects of breathwork on the inner being: your emotions and spirit
During a breathwork session, you can feel different emotions such as sadness, anger, and joy. Sometimes primal feelings and sounds emerge, for example, hunger and lust.
According to Indian Ayurveda and Chinese medicine teachings, (negative) emotions can get stuck in your energy pathways.
Often you do feel this as pain or tension in your neck or shoulders. You can then literally feel these emotions stuck as knots or muscle cramps.
Through the full and powerful breathing and abundance of oxygen (prana) flowing through your energy pathways, the stuck blockages can be activated. They move to the surface of our consciousness. Sometimes you may experience this as a particular emotion, physical tension, or uncomfortable feeling. If you allow yourself to accept and release it, you can reduce the blockages in your body.
3) Spiritual
Participants report feeling connected on a soul level. Some participants get into another state of consciousness (altered state of consciousness) and have a transcendent experience where they get in touch with ancestors or other spirits. Some say that breathing can cause the pineal gland and pituitary gland to vibrate in harmony with each other and cause activation of the third eye. This stimulates creative processes and visualizations.
WHAT IS TETNAY AND WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?
Tetany (Tetany) is characterized by cramps, tingling, or a numb feeling. It is usually experienced in the hands, calves, and lips, but can occur in other parts of the body.
Physiological explanation
During the breathing session, you breathe deeper and faster than normal. This causes less CO2 to be present in your blood. At the same time, the ph value of your blood also increases. This can lead to tetany.
Psycho-spiritual explanation
According to Stan Grof (founder of holotropic breathwork), connected faster breathing creates a biochemical process in the body that allows the emergence of old emotional and physical tensions. These may be related to unresolved psychological and physical traumas, for example. The cramps that surface during a breathing session represent unconscious material with a strong emotional charge. These can be released and processed (during the breathing session).
HOW CAN CONSCIOUS BREATHING SUPPORT ME?
The way you breathe directly influences the quality of your life. You notice this during physical activities, but also moments of difficulty. For example, when we feel anxiety, we sometimes even stop breathing for a moment. This can trigger a stress response in the system in your body. Therefore, the way you breathe and your awareness of this are essential.
In our daily lives and in this often hectic society, we often experience all kinds of challenges and stimuli. Breathwork and conscious full and deep breathing can support you well with this.
WHAT IS CONNECTED TO BREATHING?
During Breathwork you use a special breathing technique: Circular breathing also called 'connected breathing. A simple breathing method that brings you almost immediately into natural and deep breathing. Deep relaxed abdominal breathing, where you breathe through your mouth without pausing between inhalation and exhalation. This is why connected breathing is also known as "Oceanic breathing.
HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM HOLOTROPIC BREATHWORK?
The connected breathing technique is the same as the breathing technique used during Holotropic Breathwork, Rebirthing, Transformational breath, or Breathwork & Trauma Release.
In Holotropic Breathwork you have a 'sitter' and a 'breather', the breath sessions usually last 2 to 3 hours, with the 'sitter' acting as facilitator personally guiding the 'breather'.
IS BREATHWORK HEALTHY?
Breathwork promotes your health, in part because you learn to use the full capacity of your lung capacity and diaphragm. In addition, breathwork reduces feelings of tension and stress, and it helps you release and recognize emotions. This promotes mental health.
Often we forget how to breathe "properly. Especially when we are tense or feeling emotions, we breathe shallowly and quickly. During a breathwork session, you consciously breathe full and deep into your belly and chest. Deep abdominal breathing gets your diaphragm/midriff moving properly and creates more space there. Diaphragmatic breathing helps you relax and feel less stressed.
The way you breathe directly influences the quality of your life.
WHO IS BREATHWORK SUITABLE FOR?
You do not need to have experience with pranayama or other breathing techniques. Everyone is welcome, beginner or experienced.
Breathwork is safe. Your body is intelligent and knows exactly what you need. In addition, you are in control because you can control the way you breathe. Therefore, any healthy person can join a breathwork workshop and experience the benefits.
